Al in Resumes is like CGI in movies.
Hot Take:
Al in Resumes is like CGI in movies.
I woke up thinking about this analogy (yes I wake up thinking about recruiting analogies now, my brain is a weird place). Not sure why but it's the clearest explanation I have ever had for how Al feels in resumes, so l had to get it down here. I love a good (or bad really) analogy or metaphor.
Context: My other half loves sci fi and fantasy movies, I like moves with great acting and fresh plots that I have never seen before (I used to be film nerd before My Little Pony and Disney movies took over my life). But both of us can agree bad CGl is ruining movies for us all.
We all know those movies where the CGI is so obvious it makes you groan (hear that Justice League & Green Lantern?). The same goes for poorly edited Al-generated Resumes and LinkedIn profiles. It's pretty easy to spot when an algorithm has taken over and the result is as subtle as a T-Rex smashing through Pride and Prejudice with a Michael Bay style 360 spin shot. (Phone rings as someone wants to option this movie immediately)
Truly though, if I see the words fostering, beacon or synergy One. More. Time.
So keep it simple and ask yourself this before you AI your Resume and LinkedIn into bad sci-fi territory.
- Can I explain it if someone asks. (Or the more fun version of this, did I remember what I put on there in the first place)
- Does the tone and cadence reflect how I speak (or even a more polished version of my speech)
- Is it actually true. (Pretty key here)
- Is the word synergy in there. (We’ve talked about this Karen…)
So AI with caution. I’m happy to be your interventionist or AI Sponsor. Call me before you make rash decisions to AI with abandon. Poor prompting leaves a wake of destruction (and other more clever dramatic things I might say if I had AI-ed this).
Now imagine this whole post with Morgan Freeman’s voice, I guarantee you it will be better. Someone needs to create the Morgan Freeman voice filter for zoom interviews. Instant credibility, gets every job 100% of the time.
