Things that are not acceptable in a hiring process…
Today's example of Things that are Absolutely NOT Acceptable in a Hiring Process... a real example from one of my clients this last week.
Friday: Client has asked for $215k
The hiring manager makes a $200k verbal offer with details and lets candidate know the written offer is on the way from the HR team. Candidate feels ok about that number and is feeling good about the offer, waiting to see details
Monday: Offer comes in email at $175k, no explanation, no call, no information about vacation, benefits etc, just an email with a basic offer.
Monday: Client asks about the clear difference in offer and is told that the finance team felt that $175k was a more appropriate offer for their experience and says they can counter if they like to try to get to that $200k
NO.
This is not how you conduct yourself in a hiring process.
Finance/HR/Hiring Managers need to be aligned before a verbal offer. FULL STOP.
You do not sell an actual specific dollar amount in a verbal and then come back with a totally different number in a written offer with ZERO explanation and no conversation.
Do not be surprised when that candidate say no and speaks publicly about it because of all the red flags you have shown them in the process. A quick peek at Glassdoor confirms these red flags may be real.
Please hiring teams. This is appalling and unprofessionalism at this level... not acceptable. If you are not going to hire executive recruiters (or any at all), then be sure your team knows how to handle an offer process at the very minimum.
