Updating Your LinkedIn Profile? Don’t Sweat It—Here’s Why

…but what if someone notices?

It’s a question I hear all the time in coaching about LinkedIn updates. The short answer? They probably won’t. The longer answer? Even if they do, it’s not a big deal. The inside my head answer-nobody actually cares that much about your every move on LinkedIn, everyone is here for themselves (except me of course I am obviously the only wholly altruistic person on LinkedIn…👀).

Let’s be super clear: updating your LinkedIn profile doesn’t mean you’re plotting an escape. It’s just something everyone does. Keeping your profile fresh is as normal as checking your email and pretending to know what corporate acronyms mean. (TPS reports due today y’all!)

Nobody at your company is obsessively tracking your every tweak. LinkedIn doesn’t send out a company-wide alert when you update your headline to include the phrase “Synergistic Leader” (please don’t) to your skills. And even if someone is watching that closely… well, maybe ask yourself why Ken in accounting has that much time on his hands and where are your reimbursements anyway??

And let’s say you accidentally hit the dreaded “share with network” button. Don’t panic. Delete it quickly. Crisis averted.

Your LinkedIn is a living document. It’s supposed to grow and evolve, just like you. So go ahead, make those updates and refine. If someone’s lurking that hard, maybe go passive aggressively “LIKE” several of their posts so you show up in their notifications (busted Ken!). It sounds like they could use a distraction.

Now, what’s the first thing you’re going to change? Go for it or come find me, and we can do it together!
