For anyone out there looking to negotiate…
Here are a couple of super simple reminder/takeaways for anyone out there looking to negotiate.
ASK FOR IT NOW.
Not a wild outrageous amount (everyone hates that and you look ridiculous) , but if you are looking at getting hired at the end of the year, odds are you are looking at a year before you might be in a position to negotiate again. Ask for at least 10-15% more. Generally unless you have had this discussion fully in advance and they have been abundantly clear you are at max, there is a little reserve you can aim for.
AMBIGUOUS TITLES CAN BE A BLESSING.
If you have a less than desirable title or are looking at a better company but a downgrade in level, but you have an amazing job offer... see if there is some room for negotiating or wiggle room in how you frame it on future resumes or LinkedIn. Always be thinking several steps ahead, and LinkedIn titles are a FREE negotiating point for those orgs who are tapped out of money.
BE OK WITH NO.
This was the hardest one for me when I was coming up in the corporate world. What if they say no? What if they think I am ungrateful? What if I appear too greedy? What if they think I am not worth the extra money? (to be clear I still feel twinges of this EVERY DAMN DAY).
Kate today would say: those are all data points about who you are working for, how they value talent and what their financial and org structure are like, more than they are about you. So they say no, you are no worse than you were before and you can still accept the offer as is! So ask anyway.
SOFTEN IT UP AFTER WITH ENTHUSIASM!
Once you get to a final number, how you act after that is where the secret to both sides feeling good is. Come back with genuine enthusiasm for the comp, the company, the role, the people in the interview process, gratitude etc.
DON'T MAKE THEM REGRET THE EXTRA MONEY!
This one is easy, be good at your job, be a good partner, be a good new hire, be a great colleague and boss. Don't be awful, buyers remorse is real and you have to actually be that awesome person you were in the interview process.
If you need some help, I offer half sessions for quick negotiations and always find time in my weekly schedule for any last minute job offer or severance/exit negotiations (also because its my absolute favorite thing to do, I love to see the final product of people winning and crushing it in their job search).
Happy Negotiating out there!
