Friday Fun (is it though?) Fact:
The 6-Second Rule: Recruiters spend an average of 6-8 seconds looking at a resume before deciding whether to keep or discard it, that is not a myth, I can can confirm. That's why well-organized, easy-to-scan resumes are so so crucial!
Here are 3 things you can do.
1. Give your resume to a friend who does not work in the same industry as you and ask them to spend 20 seconds reading your resume- then ask them what stood out and what they think you actually do.
2. Go read some resumes people have posted online that are not in your industry or function. What stands out to you, which words/sections resonated? Then go look at linkedin profiles of people who are in your dream job. Borrow (ok steal) their verbiage and use it to write yours.
3. Ask your reading age child (or borrow someone else's) and ask them to read your resume for 20 seconds, if they can manage that attention span. Then ask them what you do for a living.
Why? No work related reason, its just fun to see what they come up with.
My older daughter told me I coach people to do MORE stuff at work - when asked what stuff? She said boring work things. So I guess that one feels about right.
My younger daughter told me I keep people safe, like a firefighter (this feels wholly inaccurate but she also thinks Bluey is real so...), when asked to explain- she asked for a snack and ignored the question.
So keep your resume scannable and don't make it hard for people to understand what you do. BE CLEAR AND EXPLICIT, especially when you are actively looking for a new role.
