Let’s talk about getting closure

Let’s talk about getting closure with your ex. 💔

Your ex company that is.

When you get laid off from a brand or team you gave your heart to, it can feel like a break up. I know some (well adjusted) people have discovered how to move through life without that feeling, I am often jealous of those folks who can just keep it easy breezy.

I fall hard with the heart, can’t help it, kind of don’t want to at this point in life, it is who I am. ✨

I mentioned in the podcast yesterday that being good at your job means being invested. I truly believe that. You don’t have to be as invested as I might be, but on some level you have to believe and want that company to do well to be a truly outstanding employee.

Layoffs involve real, actual, deep grief when you do that though, it can feel like a betrayal. Makes you want to scream in the rain up at the sky dramatically and ask “was it alll for nothing? All this work???” (That part might be the theater kid in me…)

But it’s not silly, it’s not ridiculous. It is why it’s important to take a pause, give yourself a moment, and then move forward.

I think the key is you have to know how tenuous it all is. It could be over at any moment, at will employment. Because unlike a break up, it isn’t usually personal, just business. Doesn’t make the sad less, but it might make it a shorter grieving period.

Similar to a break up, trying to date everyone immediately might not be the best first reaction. So chill for a minute before you throw 300 applications in for companies you don’t want to work for out of desperation or fear.

Think about what you want, then glow yourself the F up and remember how gorgeous that LinkedIn profile and resume and your experience really are and find your next love!

Fun fact: I also write online dating profiles as part of my consulting. The kind that get to the core of someone while being engaging, hilarious and one of a kind. It’s a small, unusual part of my work, but absolutely the most fun!
