DMing hiring managers

Most of you are failing at DMing hiring managers (also reaching out to recruiters too, but that’s a story for another day) and it’s not hard to see why.

Sliding into their DMs with a desperate “please hire me” vibe is a surefire way to get ignored. Literally no one wants that and personally those aggressive and time sensitive asks trigger stress (at least they did/do for me).

You’ve got to play it smart, and cool boooooy (went full theater nerd and had a West Side Story moment while constructing that in my head), not needy. Enter my “Acknowledgement and Disclaimer” process. It’s how you say, “I get it,” respect their time, understand they might not respond, remove pressure/give them the freedom to respond later when they can and focus on building an actual connection. Think of it as the DM glow-up you didn’t know you needed.

Hey [Hiring Manager],

I’ve been following [Company] and really admire what you’re doing, especially with [specific project or initiative]. I noticed the [Job Title] position and think my experience with [specific skill or accomplishment] could help tackle [challenge or goal they’re facing].

I know you’re busy, so if now’s not the right time, no worries. I’m here for the long haul and focused on building authentic connections.

Looking forward to staying in touch!

This is MY way of doing it, MY tone, MY vibe. You can be more formal, or use your own words, but the idea stays the same: show you get the game, respect their time.

Most of all, avoid coming off like you’re trying to win the last rose at the end of a hiring season that arguably feels like the absolute worst season of The Bachelor. Ew. I can smell the bad cologne and sadness now.

Desperation? Not cute. Confidence and connection? Always the move.

And are you desperate? Maybe, I know it’s so hard and icky out there, but the odds of that demanding “let’s put time on your calendar tomorrow” “when can you schedule time to talk about the job” pushyness working, slimmest of slim.

This method means you might get longer timeline responses but are less likely to be fully ghosted.

Have realistic expectations too, most people don’t answer, but it only takes that right one!
